We consider the floor area, mounting height, racking and obstructions, surface reflectance, work being performed, target illumination and the photometric performance of the proposed fittings. A layout based only on square metres or wattage can produce poor uniformity.
A lighting design translates the space and its required use into fitting types, positions, aiming or orientation, quantities and controls. Where project information allows, calculation software can be used to estimate illumination and uniformity before installation.
No single fitting suits every warehouse. Tubular tri-proof lighting can be appropriate where linear distribution and resistance to dust or moisture are important. Ceiling height, aisle layout, target illumination and the fitting’s tested performance must still be checked.
It can reduce energy use where efficient fittings and sensible controls replace older or poorly selected lighting. The actual saving depends on existing power, new installed power, operating hours, tariff and whether the proposed layout still achieves the required lighting result.
